Our GI services for children

Diagnostic center: Our fully equipped diagnostic center features state-of-the-art endoscopic equipment that enables complete evaluations of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract in an outpatient setting. We diagnose conditions such as celiac disease, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, intestinal polyps, and inflammatory bowel disease. We are also prepared to handle endoscopic emergencies, such as foreign bodies in the GI tract, esophageal food impactions, and GI bleeding.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) management: Our physicians are experts in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease, including conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in children and adolescents. With a team of 11 physicians and a close partnership with pediatric IBD surgeons, we have extensive experience treating children with complex IBD conditions through medication and/or surgery.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders: We are a primary center in the region for the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders, including chronic constipation, functional abdominal pain, dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, and functional disorders that cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal bloating, and distension. Many of these symptoms may also be caused by carbohydrate malabsorption and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. We perform hydrogen breath testing for the diagnosis of these disorders.

Swallowing disorders: Acid reflux or vomiting can be early signs of a swallowing disorder. We treat many children with diseases or physical issues of the esophagus that cause difficulty swallowing. In many cases, allergens may cause the esophagus to become inflamed. This can be addressed by eliminating certain foods or prescribing medication, such as a proton pump inhibitor or corticosteroid. Eosinophilic esophagitis is the most common cause of swallowing dysfunction in children. Our physicians and pediatric allergists are experts in treating this disorder.

Motility program: We perform esophageal and anorectal manometry as well as esophageal impedance studies in patients with suspected motility disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

Liver disease program: Our full-time hepatologist (liver doctor) works to understand the cause of liver conditions through genetic testing, imaging, and other tests. We also provide specialized treatment for children with fatty liver disease and complex liver diseases. Our hepatologist plays a crucial role in overseeing the pre-transplant evaluation process and providing post-transplant care for liver transplants performed at the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital.

Treatment of less common conditions: Our team is well versed in developing tailored treatment plans for patients with less common conditions, such as achalasia, chronic pancreatitis, and short bowel syndrome.

Additional GI testing and services

  • Acid reflux testing: Specialized tests to evaluate and manage acid reflux.
  • Capsule endoscopy: A non-invasive procedure using a pill-sized camera to evaluate the small intestine.
  • Colonoscopy: A diagnostic test to assess the colon and rectum for various conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease and polyps.
  • Control of gastrointestinal bleeding: Use of techniques such as endoscopic hemostasis, variceal band ligation, balloon tamponade, and angiographic embolization.
  • Endoscopy: A direct examination of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, enabling accurate diagnosis and guiding appropriate treatment decisions.
  • Esophageal stricture dilatation: A procedure used for identifying esophageal strictures.
  • Esophageal and anorectal manometry: Specialized tests to evaluate the function and movement of the esophagus and anorectal region in children with conditions related to swallowing difficulties and anorectal function.
  • Hydrogen breath testing for sugar intolerance: A test that helps determine if there are diet issues that can help resolve symptoms such as gassiness, bloating, abdominal pain or swelling, or diarrhea.
  • Liver biopsy: Involves obtaining a small tissue sample from the liver to gain important insights into the underlying condition, disease progression, and treatment selection.
  • Polypectomy: Surgical procedure to remove polyps from the GI tract, reducing the risk of complications.
