Professional History

Dr. Zia is an Associate Professor of clinical Pediatrics and Assistant Professor of cell biology and anatomy at New York Medical College. He is also the Site-Director of neonatal ICU at Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s-an affiliated program. His research is focused on “free radical generation in brain of premature infants with intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)”. Oxidative stress resulting from IVH is known to cause brain injury in premature infants. Dr. Zia and his colleagues are unlocking the mechanisms of free radical production after IVH in these infants and thus, are utilizing mechanism-based strategies to prevent brain damage by suppressing oxidative stress. He is also investigating the effect of glucocorticosteroids (GCs) on the brain.

In a recent published study, Dr. Zia and his associates found that the administration of GCs suppresses myelination (the insulation of axon- impulse circuit) and enhances gliosis (excess formation of structural cells) in brain. Currently his team is focusing on the molecular genesis of steroid induced brain injuries in preterm infants.
