
Dr. Vergales brings a strong background in clinical care, research, innovation, and education. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, where he also completed both his pediatric residency and pediatric cardiology fellowship. Dr. Vergales has been the Director of the Non-Invasive Imaging Program at UVA since 2022, Chair of the Pediatric Business Plan and Finance Committee, and Associate Chair of Pediatrics for Clinical Innovation at UVA. His clinical interests include complex congenital heart disease and fetal cardiology, including diagnosis, counseling, and care management.
Dr. Vergales is a seasoned educator, exemplified by his receiving numerous teaching awards throughout his career. He has also held several leadership positions for the American Academy of Pediatrics, including his most recent appointment as Conference Program Chair for the National Annual meeting of the AAP in 2026. Dr. Vergales also served as the Director and Developer of Building HOPE, UVA’s integrated home monitoring program for high-risk pediatric patients. While this program initially focused on children with congenital heart disease, the program’s success led to the development of similar platforms across the entire Children’s Hospital and is now used by 35 other national children’s hospitals.
