Dr. Melanie Leong is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at WMC/New York Medical College. She is a practicing neonatologist, and serves as the Director of Neonatal ECMO Services and as the Director of Neonatal Fellowship Simulation Program. She is an integral component of the Fetal Home at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital/Westchester Medical Center, which strives to provide integrated, specialized care for high-risk pregnancies.
Dr. Leong’s basic science research has been on the relationship between microRNAs, and the development of hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury and bronchopulmonary dysplasia in a murine model. This work has furthered into analyzing microRNA profiles within breastmilk. Clinically, her interest in the mechanisms of lung injury has broadened to focus on the effects that the environment, specifically air pollution and climate change, has on the health of the mother and fetus.
