Beyond just tidying up, spring cleaning is an opportunity to refresh your home in ways that promote your child’s health and well-being. Dr. Robin Schiff shares tips to ensure your home is a safe, healthy environment for your growing child. Here are a few key areas to focus on during your spring cleaning.

1. Declutter and Organize for Safety

Children grow quickly, and so do their toy collections! Take this time to sort through old toys, books, and clothes. Check for broken toys, missing pieces, or items with small parts that could be choking hazards.

2. Check Expiration Dates

Spring is a great time to go through your medicine cabinet and pantry. Safely dispose of expired medications, vitamins, and over-the-counter remedies. If you're unsure how to dispose of medications properly, check with your local pharmacy or town guidelines for medication take-back programs.

3. Improve Indoor Air Quality

With allergy season approaching, reducing dust and allergens can make a big difference. Wash curtains, vacuum carpets and upholstery, and replace air filters in your home. Consider using a HEPA filter in your child’s room if they have seasonal allergies.

4. Revisit Home Safety Measures

Use spring cleaning as an opportunity to check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Test batteries, replace expired fire extinguishers, and make sure safety gates and outlet covers are in place if you have a young child.

5. Refresh Outdoor Play Areas

As the weather warms up, children will be spending more time outside. Inspect your backyard for potential hazards—check playground equipment for loose bolts, clear out any standing water to prevent mosquitoes, and ensure outdoor toys are in good condition.

By taking small steps now, you can create a fresh, healthy environment for your family to enjoy throughout the spring season. If you have questions about your child's health and safety, please feel free to reach out to your pediatrician!
